Not If, But When - Chris Akrigg

by Chris Akrigg
Jun 3, 2011 at 9:38

I started out as a pretty hardcore trials rider back in the day. Recently I've been riding pretty much anything with two wheels, so I thought is was time to go back to my roots and put a chilled little trials edit together. Everything was going well until...

flag progression-media (Jun 3, 2011 at 12:48)
 what a beast!
although i find that when i have a bad fall), i get a huuuge adrenalin rush, and my body goes into shock..because of this i feel nothing...20 minutes later that first rush wears off, my body comes out of shock and i am paining like anything.....could be the reason chris is so calm right after his fall?
  • + 1
flag Unhallowed (Jun 3, 2011 at 19:22)
Shock and adrenalin does just that. When I broke fractured AND dislocated my wrist I sat there explaining to my friends what to do and how tie sling, then spent a bit of time calmly explaining to the 911 dispatch how the hell to get to where I was.

Theeeen the shock and adrenalin wears off, and it aint pretty.
  • + 4
flag bankturn (Jun 3, 2011 at 20:19)
It's more of an adrenal fight or flight response not shock..."shock" in the medical sense is different and involves circulatory collapse.
  • - 4
flag Unhallowed (Jun 3, 2011 at 20:37) (Below Threshold) show comment
Now you're just splitting hairs. Instead of arguing semantics you could just say something, idunno... constructive?
  • + 2
flag dhutah (Jun 3, 2011 at 20:50)
Not to point out what should be obvious Unhallowed, but it is a very important difference if you are ever in a situation where you are in shock and need to deal with that reality while waiting for medics to arrive.
  • + 6
flag Unhallowed (Jun 3, 2011 at 20:55)
Yea but you're completely ignoring the point of my post.

It's like me saying apples are red and round. Then you busting in and start yelling NO YOUR WRONG! APPLES AREN'T ROUND, THEY'RE SPHERICAL. YOU'RE WROOOONG.

Tiny little f*cking difference, that really doesn't impact the point I was trying to originally make.
If I was explaining this to a paramedic, while they are right there, then yea the difference might matter. But when simply putting why someone who just suffered a major injury is calm, me using the correct medical phrase doesn't grossly distort the meaning of that explanation.
  • + 3
flag plwaidner (Jun 3, 2011 at 22:10)
It seems pretty common to me for people to use the term "shock" when not talking about the medical term. Such as
"shock and awe" or "thats shocking" or "oh, that fence shocked me". Who cares? Quit acting like you know stuff. Many people or at least anyone who has ever taken any first aid training (even if its just the basic red cross first aid course or 12 year old boy scouts) knows what "shock" in the medical term means. The vast majority of the English speaking world uses the word "shock" on a daily basis in a vastly different way.
  • + 2
flag dualsuspensiondave (Jun 4, 2011 at 12:10)
Take it easy guys, this is informative factual information. I'm sure that it is nothing personal against unhallowed or plwaidner. This is how people are trained in the medical field. As the word "shock" can be used in many different ways, medical "shock" is quite different when used in a medical context.

Good luck on a speedy recovery! I'm sure that you will do your therapy with a good PT, and keep plugging away with a positive attitude. Keep your stress levels down, as this will help you heal quicker. Keeping a balance of mind, body, and spirit is very beneficial not only with everyday life, but with recovery as well. I just started walking 6 weeks after surgery for a ruptured patellar tendon and torn meniscus. Make short and long term goals and acheive them! You have my prayers.

Wow I guess this is the year of the femur breaks. Chris, me , and Atkinson all dealing with same injuries. I'm looking at Chris's xray and it looks very similar to how they bolted my leg back together. Those bottom screws look alot better on his, mine are sticking out too far. I'm told my surgeon, didn't you have some better hardware? I can't speak for those guys but I actually starting to walk already and just went for my first cruise on the bike. Not exactly pedaling but can skate the bike around town at least. I wish us all a speedy recovery and everyone else have a safe season, too many people injured already this year. It can obviously happen to anyone at any time.
